The faculty of the Department of Orthopaedics specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. It practices as the North Jersey Orthopaedic Institute. The faculty, which exclusively consists of fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons, represents all eight orthopaedic subspecialties. It is the only orthopaedic group in New Jersey with complete orthopaedic coverage.

Orthopaedics - Adult Joint Replacement and Reconstruction

The Division performs a variety of replacement and reconstructive services for arthritic joint conditions related to osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, inflammatory arthropathy, developmental dysplasia, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Procedures utilize novel prostheses, specialized surgical exposures, and the use of bulk bone allografts. The faculty has particular expertise in minimally invasive joint replacements; salvage of infected prostheses; and complex primary and revision surgery of the hip and knee, including those associated with tumors or acetabular fractures.

Orthopaedics - Comprehensive Sports Medicine

Orthopaedic sports medicine deals primarily with the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The goal is to provide state of the art services to the recreational, high school, college and professional athlete. These services range from an assessment and modification of athletic mechanics to physician-directed rehabilitation to operative reconstruction of damaged structures. Minimally invasive arthroscopic and open procedures of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle are offered, as well as surgery to replace damaged cartilage with the newest techniques in cartilage regeneration.

Orthopaedics - Foot & Ankle Medical Management and Surgery

The Division offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for all foot conditions and gait problems. It specializes in the medical management of diabetic foot complications, performs primary foot surgery, and secondary reconstruction due to previously failed surgeries. Treatment of complicated problems requiring surgical intervention includes bunions, hammer toes, arthritic disorders, tendon problems, post-traumatic problems, ankle pain, fractures and sports injuries.

Orthopaedics - Hand and Microvascular Surgery

The division provides diagnosis and treatment of all operative and non-operative hand and upper extremity conditions including fractures, nerve and tendon transfers, and arthritides. The division specializes in microvascular procedures for brachial plexus injuries and performs vascularized bone transfers including those for avascular necrosis of the hip. It also treats inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Joint replacements of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and finger are performed. Management of flexor tendon injuries including failed flexor tendon surgery and tendon grafts is provided.

The division addresses a wide range of problems including: stiffness and painful conditions, mutilating injuries, skin problems, and vascular disorders of the upper extremity. Soft tissue tumors of the hand, pediatric hand injuries and cerebral palsy are also treated. Expertise is available in the treatment of infections, microvascular bone and soft-tissue reconstruction, infected nonunions, and difficult fractures requiring corrective osteotomies.

Orthopaedics - Limb Lengthening and Limb Deformity Correction

The division provides a comprehensive array of treatment options for limb length discrepancies (LLDs) and deformity correction in children and adults. Staff is expert in the use of external and internal fixation modalities, including the Ilizarov and Taylor Spatial frames as well as lengthening over nails. Additionally, epiphysiodesis and growth plate stapling, prosthetic reconstruction surgery, and percutaneous osteotomy techniques are offered.

Conditions treated include limb length discrepancies and deformities caused by: trauma, including malunion and nonunion; congenital limb length discrepancies; achondroplasia and other skeletal dysplasias; infection involving the bone (osteomylelitis) and joint (septic arthritis); infection involving the bone (osteomylelitis) and joint (septic arthritis); illnesses such as Blount's Disease; pediatric hip disorders; joint stiffness following injury, infection or other causes; andsoft tissue scarring.

Orthopaedics - Musculoskeletal Oncology and Limb-Salvage

The Division performs biopsy, diagnosis, and complete treatment of all bone, joint and soft-tissue tumors including benign, primary malignant and secondary cancers in children and adults. Tumors requiring cryosurgery, chemo-radiation, brachytherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy are also treated. Other services include allograft and endoprosthetic reconstruction for limb-salvage and limb-sparing procedures; major tumor resections with endoprosthetic and allograft reconstructions including several new techniques for preserving limb growth in pediatric patients after tumor treatment.

Treatments are also available for infectious problems, including those requiring plastic or vascular procedures. Major amputations (including hemipelvectomy and forequarter amputation) and prosthetic fitting for rehabilitation are also performed. The Division offers several treatment options for metastatic bone disease including prophylactic stabilization-fixation of pathological fractures and chemo-radiation.

Orthopaedics - Orthopaedic Trauma

The Division specializes in complex intra-articular fractures (acetabulum, pelvis, knee, ankle, elbow, wrist, shoulder, etc.), along with open and infected fractures including those needing plastic and vascular procedures. Other division services include rehabilitation of patients with multiple injuries and fracture complications including nonunions, malunions, short limbs and infections. Specialists perform limb-lengthening and deformity corrections, including the Ilizarov technique and corrective osteotomies.

Orthopaedics - Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis

The Division specializes in all congenital and acquired conditions affecting the extremities and the spines of children including foot deformities, pediatric fracture problems, hip dysplasias, short and deformed limbs, and curvatures of the spine, also known as scoliosis. The Division offers specialized expertise in limb-lengthening and the Ilizarov technique.

Orthopaedics - Spine Surgery

The Division specializes in the treatment of both adult and pediatric spinal disorders. Special expertise is offered in the operative and non-operative management of spinal trauma, degenerative spinal conditions, spinal tumors and spinal deformities including scoliosis. Where indicated, minimally invasive surgical techniques are utilized, including laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and other forms of microendoscopic treatment. The Division encompasses all aspects of spine surgery including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar conditions.
