The Department of Family Medicine offers a broad range of comprehensive services with a strong emphasis on preventive medicine and the psychosocial aspects of health care. The physician-patient relationship is valued as being the fundamental core of healthcare delivery. It is from this interaction that the patient, the physician and the patient's family can join as a team to promote optimal health outcomes.

The Department offers a wide variety of medical services through the University Center for Family Medicine. General medical services are offered to adults and children, including: ambulatory gynecology; prenatal care; counseling; immunizations; preventive interventions; patient education and geriatric assessments. Additionally, patients with special needs including the developmentally disabled patient are accommodated.The University Center for Family Medicine has three Newark practice locations: the Doctors Office Center on the UMDNJ campus; 1040-1044 South Orange Avenue in the Vailsburg section of Newark; and 88-108 Shipman Street on the campus of St. James Preparatory School.
