OPHTHALMOLOGY

The Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS) provides consultation and treatment services for general and specialized ophthalmologic disorders. The fellowship-trained staff is actively involved in developing new treatments for blinding and disfiguring conditions of the eye, lid, and orbit and provides ready access for patients to novel therapies. Centers of excellence established by these physicians include: the Cornea and Laser Vision Institute, the Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research, the Ophthalmic Laser Center and Center for Minimally Invasive Treatment, the Eye Trauma Center of New Jersey, the Fight for Sight Children's Eye Center, the Keratoconus Foundation, and the Low Vision Center.

Ophthalmology - Comprehensive Ophthalmology

The Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service offers the latest technological advances to treat general eye disorders. This service offers eye exams, refractions, and other eye surgeries, including state-of-the-art techniques for treating many types of cataracts. Emergent walk-in services are available as are scheduled visits. Staff members are proficient in evaluation and treatment of workers compensation cases.

Ophthalmology - Contact Lens

This service offers a full range of cosmetic and therapeutic contact lenses and has extensive experience handling difficult cases necessitating specially designed lenses, including those for infants, keratoconus patients, and patients with disfiguring corneal scars.

Ophthalmology - Cornea & External Ocular Diseases

Diagnosis and treament of corneal ulcers, chemical burns, and traumatic corneal injuries is available. Corneal transplantation and excimer laser surgery procedures are also available (e.g., for the treatment of corneal scarring).

Ophthalmology - Glaucoma

The Glaucoma Division offers comprehensive glaucoma consultative and surgical services. The diagnostic laboratory includes the latest instrumentation for structural and functional evaluations of patients. The glaucoma specialists have particular expertise in the diagnosis and management of complicated glaucomas, such as neovascular glaucoma and normal tension glaucoma. The Division offers medical, laser, and incisional surgical treatments including glaucoma drainage devices for intraocular pressure control.

Patients with multisystem disorders such as sarcoidosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or vasculitis for ocular and/or systemic manifestations are evaulated and immunoregulatory therapies are tailored to the needs of each patient. This service is a unique collaborative effort of the Uveitis/Tumor and Neuro-ophthalmology Services and the Division of Allergy and Immunology of the Department of Medicine.

Ophthalmology - Low Vision

Janis White, OD, PhD, Director

Comprehensive care of the visually impaired or blind patient includes meticulous refraction, individual counseling on the selection and use of low vision aids, referral for mobility training, and social services. The goal of the Low Vision Service is to enable the partially-sighted individual to remain functional and independent when standard spectacles, contact lenses, or surgery no longer suffice. The service dispenses a full-range of devices to aid those with low vision to function more effectively with their remaining vision. The staff works closely with physicians in the Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research to optimize patient care.

Ophthalmology - Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research

The Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research provides state-of-the-art treatment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), including the latest FDA approved treatment modalities for neovascular AMD - Macugen (pegaptanib sodium injection) and photodynamic (Visudyne) therapy. Experimental drugs and operations (in the context of Institutional Review Board-approved clinical trials) are also available. The Center is involved in a number of research projects and clinical trials including those related to various aspects of photoreceptor and retinal pigment epithelium transplantation.

Ophthalmology - Neuro-Ophthalmology

Diagnosis and treatment are provided for visual pathway tumors, inflammatory optic neuropathies, double vision, unexplained visual loss (including multiple sclerosis patients), neurosarcoidosis, and autoimmune diseases affecting the visual system. The service has vast experience with visual problems of the head-injured patient. Clinical trials of new treatments for optic neuropathies such as those due to multiple sclerosis and trauma are offered.

Ophthalmology - Ocular Trauma

This Division treats all types of eye trauma. A team of highly skilled specialists is on-call 24-hours/day and utilizes the latest surgical devices (such as heavier than water liquids and wide angle viewing systems) to manage complex cases and give severely damaged eyes the best prognosis possible. The oculoplastics and orbit team has extensive experience with eye socket, eye lid, and lacrimal drainage system reconstruction after trauma.

Ophthalmology - Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive and Orbital Surgery

This section offers medical and surgical treatment of thyroid disease, treatment of ptosis, cosmetic surgery, and botulinum (Botox) toxin treatment of blepharospasm. Specializing in the surgery and management of orbital tumors, the staff is highly experienced in reconstructive, plastic and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, tear ducts, socket and orbit. The most sophisticated surgical techniques and equipment including laser resurfacing and endoscopic surgery are used.

This section offers medical and surgical treatment for childhood glaucoma, childhood cataract, ptosis, strabismus and lacrimal system repair. This service is one of five Fight For Sight Children's Eye Centers nationwide. Special amblyopia screening programs are being developed by this section, as well.

Ophthalmology - Refractive Surgery

The Cornea and Laser Vision Institute offers the latest technological advances, including excimer laser surgery, LASIK, and radial keratotomy. In addition to treatment for routine cases, this Center conducts nationally recognized clinical trials of experimental refractive surgical procedures for patients with complex problems such as high degrees of astigmatism.

This service provides expert management of inflammatory diseases and tumors of the visual system as well as systemic diseases with ocular manifestations including Lyme Disease, sarcoid, and AIDS.

Ophthalmology - Vitreoretinal Surgery and Medical Retina

This section treats and evaluates disorders of retina, macula, and vitreous including retinal detachment, macular degeneration, macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa (and allied diseases), and retinopathy of prematurity. Novel treatments for patients with complex retinal problems are conducted by the Department's Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research.

The Ophthalmic Imaging Center features the most sophisticated diagnostic image analysis equipment in New Jersey (including scanning laser ophthalmoloscopy and retinal topography as well as confocal fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography).

The Retinal Electrophysiology Laboratory, supported in part by the National Eye Institute and Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., is one of the most sophisticated electrophysicologic diagnostic laboratories on the East Coast and conducts studies in electroretinography, electro-oculography, visual evoked potentials, macular blood flow, and blue cone ERG.

In addition to ongoing clinical research programs in macular degeneration, the Department conducts a major National Eye Institute-supported research program studying prevalence of and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in African-Americans with type I diabetes.
