DENTAL MEDICINE

Vincent Ziccardi, DDS, MD, Chairman

The Department of Dental Medicine provides a wide range of general and specialty services, including treatment of patients with diseases of the face, mouth and jaw. The department also provides dental care to individuals who are medically compromised and must be treated in a hospital environment, and offers a host of pediatric dentistry services. The department is divided into three divisions: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Hospital Dentistry, which includes general practice and oral medicine; and Pediatric Dentistry, which includes a special care treatment center and a pediatric dentistry program.

All divisions of the department supply consultation services to other units and departments within University Hospital. In addition, the department provides services that support the activity of other services within University Hospital, (i.e. dental clearance prior to tumor ablative surgery and/or radiation treatment, eradication of sources of infection prior to transplant surgery or cardiac surgery, etc).

Dental Medicine - Division of Hospital Dentistry

The Division of Hospital Dentistry, in collaboration with the New Jersey Dental School Department of Diagnostic Sciences’ Division of Oral Medicine, provides consultation and treatment services for patients with chronic oral mucosal and salivary gland disorders, medically complex patients who require dental care (post-organ transplant, bleeding disorders, labile cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dialysis, physical and mental disability, and oncology patients), and patients with chronic musculosketal and neurogenous facial pain.

Dental Medicine - Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Vincent Ziccardi, DDS, MD, Chief of Service

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is responsible for treating patients with diseases of the face, mouth and jaws. The faculty provides consultation and surgical services across the entire scope of this specialty, including: the acute management of major facial trauma; the reconstruction of the facial skeleton following traumatic injuries or cancer ablation; the surgical management of craniofacial and jaw deformities; treatment of major infections and benign cysts and tumors of the maxillofacial region; treatment of oral cancer; the placement of dental implants; arthroscopic and open surgical management of temporomandibular joint disorders; facial pain management and microsurgery of the trigeminal nerve; and surgery to improve facial appearance.

Dental Medicine - Division of Pediatric Dentistry

The Division of Pediatric Dentistry provides comprehensive dental care for all patients, including medically compromised children who are inpatients or outpatients. Emergency treatment is provided 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week through the pediatric emergency room or the dental medicine clinic. Some patients receive comprehensive care and rehabilitation in the operating room under general anesthesia. These patients include the very young who are unable to cooperate for routine dental procedures in an outpatient setting and whose dental needs are extensive, the medically compromised with extensive dental needs, or the disabled.

Dental Medicine - Special Care Treatment Center

Justin H. Stone, DDS, Director

The Special Care Treatment Center provides a complete range of dental treatment for people with disabilities who are unable to be treated in the usual dental office setting. A variety of management techniques are utilized, and treatment under general anesthesia in the University Hospital operating room is available when necessary.
