Surgery - Vascular Surgery

Peter Pappas, MD, Chief

The Division of Vascular Surgery provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to general vascular surgery. Specific areas of interest include the evaluation and treatment of cerebrovascular disease, aneurysms, upper extremity vascular disorders, diabetic foot problems, chronic venous diseases, deep vein thrombosis, and injuries related to or deriving from trauma, including arterial and venous abnormalities.

The Center for Vascular Disease is supported by a grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health. The Center maintains a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of diseases of the vascular system. Particular expertise is available in reconstructive procedures for arterial insufficiency of the extremities, including bypass grafting employing in-situ techniques.

A nationwide, multicenter study currently under way comparing outcomes achieved through stent-assisted angioplasty with outcomes achieved through endarterectomy. The Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial (CREST) is looking at the use of these procedures in treating carotid artery stenosis to prevent recurrent strokes in patients who have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mild ischemic stroke.
