Medicine - Medical Oncology/Hematology

Lawrence Harrison, MD, Associate Director for Clinical Services

The clinical oncology staff provides comprehensive diagnosis, staging and treatment services to cancer patients. Particular expertise is available in the areas of breast cancer, lymphoma, head and neck, lung, genitourinary and gastrointestinal cancers, and HIV associated malignancies.

Clinical trails of new drugs and biological response modifiers are being conducted as well as Phase I and Phase II disease-oriented treatment protocols unavailable elsewhere. Studies are organized as local protocols or as part of group-wide studies under the auspices of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project (NSABP), and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG).

Administration of chemotherapy in a multidisciplinary program is accomplished with special attention given to maximizing the patient's comfort and well-being. A full range of chemotherapeutic techniques include long-term infusion, administration of biological response modifiers (monoclonal antibodies and other modalities), and hematopoietic growth factors.

The hematology section offers consultation in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of blood disorders. Particular expertise and research interest is in bone marrow failure states, particularly aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis, and immunologic disorders affecting hematopoiesis. Other areas of interest include hemoglobinopathies, myelodysplasia, leukemia and lymphomas. Appropriate patients may be entered into ongoing clinical trials concerned with the control and amelioration of crises associated with sickle cell anemia.

Specialized laboratory support provides cell surface markers, gene rearrangement analysis, coagulation function tests, and high resolution cytogenetic studies.
