The division provides a full-range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for disorders of the gastrointestinal system including diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon and rectum, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Commonly treated problems are peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease, colonic polyps, gallstone disease, acute and chronic liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, colon cancer screening, and motility disorders of the esophagus, stomach and colon.Patients are evaluated endoscopically with a modern, state-of-the-art videoendoscopic computerized system. Diagnostic and therapeutic services to evaluate the stomach, colon and small intestine are available. Special procedures such as esophageal, pancreatic and biliary stent placement, balloon dilation of strictures, endoscopic ultrasonography with fine needle biopsy, and push enteroscopy are offered. Percutaneous liver biopsy to evaluate diseases of the liver is provided. For evaluation of GI motor disorders, a modern motility system including 24-hour pH monitoring, esophageal manometry and anal manometry are available. Additionally, capsule endoscopy is available to diagnose disorders of the small bowel.
