The division offers comprehensive evaluation, consultation, and medical management of diseases of the heart and circulatory system. Expertise is available in abnormalities of cardiac rhythm and conduction, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathies, heart failure and valvular heart disease. A wide-range of invasive and non-invasive diagnostic as well as interventional modalities are available. The staff is involved in a controlled drug study for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

Cardiology - Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratories

The laboratory is equipped with a state-of-the-art, digital flat-plane imaging system and performs the following diagnostic studies and interventional techniques: coronary angiography; cardiac catheterization; coronary angioplasty (PTCA); stent insertion – including drug-eluting stents, coronary atherectomy (rotoblator); brachytherapy for vessel reocclusion; valvuloplasty; complex electrophysiological studies; catheter ablations; defibrillator and pacemaker implantation; and peripheral angiography.

The laboratory also accepts referrals of acutely ill patients requiring mechanical assist with intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation.

The New Jersey Cardiovascular Institute (NJCI)

Cardiology - Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Christine Gerula, MD

The program is designed to assist cardiac patients in returning to optimal cardiovascular health. Treatment is customized to the needs of the individual patient and includes a program of monitored exercise as well as education on lifestyle modification and nutrition.

Candidates for the program are patients with significant cardiac symptoms, recent myocardial infarction, or recent open heart surgery.

Cardiology - Echocardiography Laboratory

Muhamed Saric, MD, PhD, Director

The laboratory is equipped with a digital state-of-the-art imaging system that performs M-Mode, two-dimensional and Doppler (spectral and color) echo modalities to evaluate cardiac valve anatomy and function as well as myocardial structure and function. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) as well as exercise and pharmacologic stress echo testing are routinely performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Cardiology - Electrocardiography Laboratory

The Lab provides 12-lead and 24 hour Holter Monitor ECG testing for detection of abnormal heart rhythms.

Medicine - Preventive Cardiology Program

The services of the program focus on the prevention of cardiovascular disease and the reduction or management of existing risk factors, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and coronary disease. A major emphasis is nondrug treatment through lifestyle modifications, including weight loss.

Programs are conducted on an individual or group basis by a multidisciplinary staff of physicians, nutritionists, and psychologists.
