Surgery - Bloodless Surgery and Medicine

The University Center for Bloodless Surgery and Medicine provides the highest quality care to all patients who wish to avoid the use of blood transfusions. A team of physicians, nurses and other health professionals provide care across the full spectrum of services at University Hospital, utilizing the latest bloodless techniques for a wide range of elective and emergency procedures. The team is committed to the concept of bloodless surgery and medicine and will honor the wishes of patients requesting this type of treatment.

A full-time coordinator is available to work with referring physicians and patients and their families before, during and after hospitalization to ensure satisfaction with the bloodless treatment.

Surgery - Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery provides consultation and treatment services for cardiothoracic disorders, including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery; aortic homograft valve replacement; minimally invasive cardiac surgery; atrial fibrillation surgery, including the Cox-MAZE procedure; heart failure surgery, including Surgical Anterior Ventricular Restoration (SAVR); pulmonary and esophageal surgery, and pacemaker insertion. The Division also offers state of the art robotic surgery for mitral valve replacement surgery and for harvesting of the internal mammary artery, crucial to many bypass surgeries, as well as placement of pacemaker leads for resynchronization therapy.

Through its affiliation with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Division offers patients access to the latest treatments, including the LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) mechanical heart, heart transplantation, and a variety of clinical trials. One such trial, Surgical Treatments for Ischemic Heart Failure (STICH) will compare three treatment protocols for heart failure patients: medical therapy alone; medical therapy with CABG surgery; and medical therapy with CABG surgery and surgical ventricular restoration.

The Division provides comprehensive expertise in the full range of general thoracic surgical procedures, with appropriate multidisciplinary participation in the diagnosis and treatment planning and delivery of each case. Compassionate care is provided to patients with all forms of thoracic cancers, including those of the lung, esophagus and trachea. Unique expertise is available in the surgical treatment of tuberculosis and myasthenia gravis. Benign tumors, tracheal stenosis, and hyperhidrosis are additional areas of interest and service.

Surgery - Emergency Department

The Emergency Department at University Hospital provides care to adults and children with minor to acute illnesses and injuries – from cuts and abrasions to the flu, from microsurgery to head trauma. Working side by side with the New Jersey Trauma Center, the only Level I trauma center in Northern New Jersey, the Department offers the highest level of care. It is the busiest emergency department in the State of New Jersey with more than 70,000 visits annually. The cornerstones of the Department are the Heart Center that provides an integrated approach to cardiac care, and the Stroke Center featuring treatments available in only a handful of hospitals nationwide.

Other important components of the Department include a dedicated pediatric emergency area which offers care to injured and ill children in a cheerful and self-contained area. Fast-track provides expedited care to adults with less serious conditions with a shortened waiting time. A locked and supervised psychiatric emergency area provides care to individuals in crisis. The Safe & Sound program provides care and support for victims of domestic violence and violent crimes and is staffed by specially trained counselors.

In addition, the Emergency Department staff is trained in the appropriate response for disasters, both natural and man-made, including acts of terrorism.

Surgery - General Surgery

The Division has faculty specializing in the entire field of digestive disease surgery, including surgery of the liver, pancreas, biliary tract, stomach, colon, and rectum. Diagnostic and surgical expertise is also available in breast cancer, including the most accurate and minimally invasive biopsy techniques. Hernia repair, thyroid surgery and surgery of the endocrine glands are additional areas of interest. A unique area of competence is the medical and surgical therapy of chronic and acute wounds, including burns and soft tissue infections. The staff is proficient in the latest techniques of laser surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and laparoscopic techniques. The Division also offers expertise in the area of bloodless surgery and medicine. Patients requiring re-operative or complex surgery are particularly welcomed for referral.

Surgery - Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Division of Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery provides cross-departmental coordination in the application of the latest in minimally invasive surgical and diagnostic techniques. The Division offers a wide range of general surgical procedures, including esophagogastric fundoplasty, and thoracosopic sympathectomy for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Additionally, videosurgical applications in gynecology, plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, pediatrics, obesity management, and trauma are provided.

The Obesity Treatment Center is a state-of-the-art surgical therapy program for patients with clinically severe (morbid) obesity that does not respond to non-operative treatment. The Center provides a full array of pre- and post-surgical support services, including endocrine medicine, psychiatry and nutritional sciences.

Surgery - Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

The Division of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery provides consultative and therapeutic services for patients needing care with problems pertaining to ear, nose, and throat disorders, head and neck oncology, endoscopic procedures of the upper airway and digestive tract, communicative disorders, maxillofacial surgery, and audiology services. The highly specialized areas of Otology and Neurotology are also within this Division and consultations for treatment of disorders such as temporal bone tumors, including acoustic neuromas and glomus tumors, vertigo and other balance disorders, and Meniere’s disease may be arranged. The Division also offers services in Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Skull Base Surgery is performed by the Division through superior collaborative relationships with Neurosurgery, including subspecialists in neuro-otology, Plastic Surgery, and Craniofacial Surgery and assure the optimal approach for each individual patient.

Anterior skull base approaches are used to treat a wide range of lesions, including traumatic, infectious, and neoplastic conditions. Precise imaging techniques, including intraoperative MRI, are employed, and advances in the endoscopic treatment of pituitary tumors are being explored.

Posterior approaches are employed with the assistance of neuro-otologists to treat patients with acoustic neuromas and other tumors of the cerebellopontine angle, tumors of the juglar foramen, as well as traumatic injuries to the facial nerve.

The Audiology Service offers a full range of auditory evaluation and rehabilitation including conventional audiometry, impedance typanometry, electronystagmography, and brainstem evoked audiometry. Patients with tinnitus are evaluated and rehabilitated. The Cochlear Implant Center offers surgical treatment for patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss, who cannot obtain benefit from hearing aids and whose hearing loss is due to damaged inner ear hair cells.

The Laboratory of Voice disorders is a clinical facility for evaluating patients with hoarseness or disorders of phonation. This evaluation process includes examination by a laryngologist as well as endoscopic videostroboscopy.

The Swallowing Center provides a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis and manages the care of patients with the full range of swallowing disorders from aspiration to heartburn to reflux disease. Specialties represented on the team include gastroenterology, surgery, neurology, otolaryngology, physiatry, as well as speech and language pathology.

Surgery - Palliative Care

The Section of Palliative Care focuses on the special needs of critically ill and terminally ill patients and their families. Palliative care is offered in the form of guidance to families through shared decision-making, pain and symptom management and on-going family support. It is offered throughout the hospital, but is focused in the ICU setting. The section provides up-front, intensive bereavement support and help making important decisions quickly.

Surgery - Pediatric Surgery

The Section of Pediatric Surgery provides comprehensive general surgical care for pediatric patients of all ages. This includes surgical procedures for the management of the premature and full-term neonate with congential anomalies. In addition, both routine and complex surgical conditions in children and adolescents are managed by the Section. This encompasses a broad range of head and neck, thoracic, abdominal, and urologic procedures for the treatment of disorders ranging from inguinal hernias to childhood tumors. The Section works in close collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics to ensure comprehensive medical care for the child undergoing surgery. In addition, a broad array of pediatric specialists, including experts in pediatric anesthesia, radiology, gastroenterology, immunology, nephrology and related sub-specialties are present full-time on site.

Surgery - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Division of Plastic Surgery offers diverse surgical services to treat a comprehensive range of disorders and injuries, as well as elective cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgery is a major focus of the division, with a special concentration on facial rejuvenation (facelift, browlift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, ear surgery, etc.), and body contouring (liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast enhancement, and breast lifting), particularly after bariatric surgery or any significant weight loss.

Particular expertise is available in the reconstruction of tumor defects from oncologic procedures, including breast reconstruction and salivary gland treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of all varieties of skin cancer is another field of interest, including reconstruction following Mohs' surgery.

The treatment of complex wounds includes assessment and treatment with the latest modalities. FDA-sponsored clinical trials of developing advanced technologies for wound healing are offered for qualified patients at no cost.

Congenital deformities, such as cleft lip and palate, are treated in concert with a multidisciplinary Craniofacial Center. All other deformities, including traumatic, post-radiation, post-surgical, etc., are managed using the latest surgical techniques, including extensive experience with microsurgical procedures.

Hand surgery, including treatment of industrial accidents, is a specialty of the division. A center for re-plantation and microsurgery is based at University Hospital offering treatment for traumatic amputations.

Surgery - Surgical Oncology

The Section of Surgical Oncology is engaged in the treatment of tumors of the breast, thyroid, colon/rectum, pancreas, liver, melanoma, and sarcomas. It works in close cooperation with the divisions of Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology and participates in the intraoperative surgical treatment of advanced tumors, including intraoperative hyperthermic peritoneal perfusion (IHPP) to treat advanced abdominal cancers. In addition, the Section offers a variety of regional therapies for hepatic tumors, including resection, radiofrequency ablation, embolization, alcohol injection and hepatic artery infusion thereapy.

Surgery - Transplantation Surgery

The Division of Transplantation Surgery, the first liver transplant center in New Jersey is also one of the nation’s busiest. Offering expertise in treating adult patients with liver failure requiring liver transplantation, the Division provides comprehensive multi disciplinary team management of other complex hepatobiliary disorders, such as liver tumors, Hepatitis C, biliary strictures, and portal hypertension.

The team consists of a designated group of physicians, physician assistants, nurse coordinators, social workers, financial coordinators, and nutritionists. Nurse coordinators play an important role as the daily, direct and personal liaison between the transplant team and the patient.

A dedicated in-patient unit provides standardized pre- and post-transplant care. An active support group for patients who are awaiting transplant and who have undergone transplant is also supported by the Division.

The division also provides follow-up care to patients transplanted at other centers.

Surgery - Trauma and Critical Care

The Division of Trauma provides 24-hour, front-line attending coverage to the New Jersey Trauma Center, the state-designated Level I Trauma Center serving northern New Jersey. It offers a full range of trauma services with subspecialty assistance in orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery, and related fields.

Three trauma-dedicated operating rooms are immediately available for critically injured patients and a Trauma-Surgical Intensive Care Unit is staffed by the division to provide the appropriate level of ongoing monitoring and treatment required by patients with multiple injuries. A neurosurgical intensive care unit receives patients with neurological trauma. A dedicated trauma nursing unit, including a 4-bed step-down unit, is maintained to accommodate less severely injured patients and patients recovering from major trauma. It is staffed by an experienced trauma nurse/physician assistant team.

The staff has access to state-of-the-art technology such as special blood banking services and autotransfusion and is supported by specially trained nurses and other health care professionals.

All of the trauma surgeons maintain personal, one-to-one follow-up with their patients. Communication with case managers and primary care physicians is consistently maintained for all trauma cases.

The New Jersey Trauma Center serves as the medical control for the NorthSTAR Air Medical Helicopter Transport Program, which serves the Level I and II Trauma Centers of the northern and central portions of the state. NorthSTAR is available for both on scene and inter-facility transports according to a triage system based upon severity of injury and transport time.

Surgery - Urology

The Section of Urology offers consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic services to inpatients and outpatients for disorders of the genitourinary system. Sophisticated radiological and urological instrumentation is available for diagnosis and treatment of complicated cases.

A multidisciplinary setting for the evaluation and management of patients with genitourinary malignancies, such as bladder or kidney cancer, emphasizing state-of-the-art therapy combined with clinical trials not available in the community, has been established. Second opinions as well as primary care for patients with urologic cancer are provided by urologic oncologists, radiation therapists, and medical oncologists. A nursing oncology support program is also available.

Reconstructive surgery of the lower urinary tract for traumatic urethral strictures, hypospadias, vesicovaginal fistulas, traumatic injuries to the bladder and ureters, and replacement of the lower ureter is offered by this Section. Oncological surgical procedures include radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, and nephrectomy; lymph node dissection; and pelvic exenteration.

Minimally invavsive surgical techniques are available for a variety of procedures including kidney stone removal, nephrectomy, and partial nephrectomy. The Division also uses robotic surgery for certain urlologic surgeries including the removal of prostate glands.

The University Prostate Brachytherapy Center provides patients with a comprehensive array of treatment options for prostate cancer. This multi-disciplinary Center is in conjunction with the Department of Radiology.

The Male Sexual Dysfunction Center provides state-of-the-art evaluation and management of male erectile dysfunction. Therapies offered include various pharmacologic injection therapy programs, penile prosthesis insertion for new or re-do difficult implant cases, and microvascular penile arterial bypass procedures for patients with pure arteriogenic erectile dysfunction.

Comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and follow-up of patients with stone disease is provided in concert with the Stone Center of New Jersey. The Stone Center, a free-standing facility on the UMDNJ Newark campus, features an HM-4 lithotriptor.

Surgery - Vascular Surgery

The Division of Vascular Surgery provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to general vascular surgery. Specific areas of interest include the evaluation and treatment of cerebrovascular disease, aneurysms, upper extremity vascular disorders, diabetic foot problems, chronic venous diseases, deep vein thrombosis, and injuries related to or deriving from trauma, including arterial and venous abnormalities.

The Center for Vascular Disease is supported by a grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health. The Center maintains a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of diseases of the vascular system. Particular expertise is available in reconstructive procedures for arterial insufficiency of the extremities, including bypass grafting employing in-situ techniques.

A nationwide, multicenter study currently under way comparing outcomes achieved through stent-assisted angioplasty with outcomes achieved through endarterectomy. The Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial (CREST) is looking at the use of these procedures in treating carotid artery stenosis to prevent recurrent strokes in patients who have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mild ischemic stroke.
