Hosseinali Shahidi, MD, Acting Chief of Emergency Medicine Ronald Low, MD, Academic Chief
The Emergency Department at University Hospital provides care to adults and children with minor to acute illnesses and injuries – from cuts and abrasions to the flu, from microsurgery to head trauma. Working side by side with the New Jersey Trauma Center, the only Level I trauma center in Northern New Jersey, the Department offers the highest level of care. It is the busiest emergency department in the State of New Jersey with more than 70,000 visits annually. The cornerstones of the Department are the Heart Center that provides an integrated approach to cardiac care, and the Stroke Center featuring treatments available in only a handful of hospitals nationwide.Other important components of the Department include a dedicated pediatric emergency area which offers care to injured and ill children in a cheerful and self-contained area. Fast-track provides expedited care to adults with less serious conditions with a shortened waiting time. A locked and supervised psychiatric emergency area provides care to individuals in crisis. The Safe & Sound program provides care and support for victims of domestic violence and violent crimes and is staffed by specially trained counselors. In addition, the Emergency Department staff is trained in the appropriate response for disasters, both natural and man-made, including acts of terrorism.
