Surgery - Cardiothoracic Surgery

Barry Esrig, MD, Chief

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery provides consultation and treatment services for cardiothoracic disorders, including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery; aortic homograft valve replacement; minimally invasive cardiac surgery; atrial fibrillation surgery, including the Cox-MAZE procedure; heart failure surgery, including Surgical Anterior Ventricular Restoration (SAVR); pulmonary and esophageal surgery, and pacemaker insertion. The Division also offers state of the art robotic surgery for mitral valve replacement surgery and for harvesting of the internal mammary artery, crucial to many bypass surgeries, as well as placement of pacemaker leads for resynchronization therapy.

Through its affiliation with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Division offers patients access to the latest treatments, including the LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) mechanical heart, heart transplantation, and a variety of clinical trials. One such trial, Surgical Treatments for Ischemic Heart Failure (STICH) will compare three treatment protocols for heart failure patients: medical therapy alone; medical therapy with CABG surgery; and medical therapy with CABG surgery and surgical ventricular restoration.

The Division provides comprehensive expertise in the full range of general thoracic surgical procedures, with appropriate multidisciplinary participation in the diagnosis and treatment planning and delivery of each case. Compassionate care is provided to patients with all forms of thoracic cancers, including those of the lung, esophagus and trachea. Unique expertise is available in the surgical treatment of tuberculosis and myasthenia gravis. Benign tumors, tracheal stenosis, and hyperhidrosis are additional areas of interest and service.
