The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health offers extensive expertise in the management of high-risk pregnancies; treatment of malignancies in the reproductive system; and treatment of difficult gynecological problems. The department also offers complete primary obstetrical and gynecological care.

Ob/Gyn - General Obstetrics and Gynecology

A full range of primary/general obstetrical and gynecological services are provided by the practitioners in this section. Coordination with specialty and sub-specialty services, across all departmental lines, is carefully maintained to ensure continuity for patients.

Ob/Gyn - Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, and Gynecologic Urology

The Division offers consultation and treatment for a complete range of gynecologic disorders including malignancies of the female pelvis, urologic disorders, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The division also specializes in treating a variety of pelvic floor disorders including genital prolapse and incontinence. Pelvic reconstructive surgery is also available.

Oncologic services available include colposcopic evaluations and laser therapy for dysplastic lesions of the vulva, vagina and cervix. Other cancer treatment includes radical and reconstructive surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Patients may be entered into ECOG and RTOG protocols.

Medical and surgical treatment is available for resistant vaginitis, dyspareumia, urinary incontinence, large pelvic masses, and uterine fibroids.

Ob/Gyn - Maternal Fetal Medicine

The Division offers a complete range of services related to the management of pregnancies from normal to highest risk. It is a key component of the hospital's state-designed Level III perinatal center. Particular expertise is available in obstetrical emergencies and complications, such as premature rupture of membranes or premature labor, multiple gestation, intrauterine growth retardation, third-trimester bleeding, postmaturity, severe preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders, and infectious diseases.

A multidisciplinary approach is used for the management of complicated pregnancies such as those involving HIV infection, diabetes, hypertension, RH sensitization, and vascular disease.

Ob/Gyn - Prenatal Diagnosis and Infectious Diseases

Joseph Apuzzio, MD, Director

The staff of the division has special training and interest in the diagnosis and management of high-risk pregnancies. Services include amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, alpha-fetoprotein tests, chromosomal analysis for congenital malformations, and detailed ultrasonography and color Doppler flow studies to identify fetal anomalies. A genetic scan is available for those patients who decline genetic amniocentesis. These services are supported by genetic counseling and education for parents.

The division also has experience in the diagnosis and treatment of perinatal HIV infection and other viral infections such as TORCH.
