Neurosciences - Epilepsy Center

David Marks, MD, Co-Director
Jayoung Pak, MD, Co-Director

The University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center offers patients a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options and features a highly skilled, experienced medical team, state-of-the-art equipment, and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that includes social workers, nutritionists, and rehabilitation professionals.

Continuous video-electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring is central to determining the cause of a patient’s seizures. The Center utilizes five monitoring units, two of which are used exclusively for children. The staff has extensive experience in monitoring, other specialized EEG procedures, and the use of functional MRI scanning.

The Center is at the forefront of exciting developments in anti-epileptic drugs. Clinical trials are available for adults and children who have not responded well to conventional medications. In some cases, patients with intractable seizures may require surgery. The Center offers epilepsy surgery to selected patients for whom there is no other option. Presurgical workup will include EEG monitoring, neuropsychological evaluation, and coronal MRI using a special epilepsy protocol.

Neurosciences - Pediatric Neurology

Rosario R. Trifiletti, MD, PhD, Chief

The Division provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for neurological disorders in infants and children to age 18 (older patients may be seen in special circumstances). These include neonatal disorders, neuromuscular disorders, metabolic disorders, epilepsy, headaches, movement disorders and behavioral disorders, including autism, learning disabilities and school failure.

Special interests of the division members include epilepsy, autism and movement disorders, especially tic disorders/Tourette syndrome/OCD/PANDAS. Division members engage in clinical and/or basic research in their area of interests.

A comprehensive epilepsy program offers all modalities of treatment including standard and experimental medication, ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulation and epilepsy surgery (in conjunction with the department of neurosurgery).

The Autism Center, offers neurological evaluation and treatment of patients suspected to have autistic spectrum disorders, or pervasive developmental disorders (PDD).

The Division also includes heads one of the very few pediatric movement disorder clinics in the country, with a focus on tics/OCD/PANDAS, but with interest in a broad range of movement disorders and metabolic diseases.

Division members also participate in specialty clinics in neurogenetics, neurofibromatosis, and neuromuscular diseases.

Neurosciences - Peripheral Neuoropathy Center

Nizar Souayah, MD, Director

The Peripheral Neuropathy Center provides multidisciplinary coordination for the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of peripheral neuropathies. While the goal is to treat the underlying condition, in cases where that is not possible, the focus moves to effective pain management and symptom relief.

The Center offers comprehensive medical/neurological evaluations, including the most sophisticated neurophysiological, radiologic and blood testing techniques. A wide range of medications and therapies are offered.

Neurosciences - Stroke Center

Adnan Qureshi, MD, Director

The Stroke Center is New Jersey’s only academically based comprehensive stroke program and was established to provide early diagnosis and management of acute stroke and to reduce the disability and mortality from stroke. The Center, which operates 24/7, integrates multiple disciplines in the care of stroke patients, including interventional neuro-radiology, cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, nursing, nutrition, social work services and physical, speech and occupational therapies.

The Center provides specialized neuro-intensive care and a step-down Stroke Unit, with dedicated intensive care medical and nursing staff, physical rehabilitation services for stroke and cerbrovascular trauma and stroke prevention and early intervention services.

Advanced diagnostic capabilities at the Center include brain imaging tests, computed axial tomography (CAT or CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), blood flow tests, carotid ultrasound, cerebral angiography, computed tomographic angiography (CT angiography or CT-A), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and transcranial doppler (TCD).

The Center is staffed and equipped to evaluate, treat and prevent all forms of stroke and vascular conditions leading to stroke. Treatment modalities include surgical and drug treatments, as well as innovative endovascular (intra-arterial) procedures originally developed for use in the heart including mechanical clot-busting, angioplasty with stenting and, the Center has pioneered use of drug eluted stents and embolic protection in the removal of blockages in the brain.

The Center maintains active involvement in research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), medical foundations and other sources.

Currently, the Center is a principal investigator for a nationwide, multi-center study comparing two drugs commonly used in stroke prevention: Warfarin vs. Aspirin in Reduced Cardiac Ejection Fraction (WARCEF) Trial. The study will determine which of two commonly used treatments is better for preventing death and stroke.

Another trial, the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial (CREST) is looking at the use of these procedures in treating carotid artery stenosis to prevent strokes in patients who have had a TIA or mile ischemic stroke.
