There's no substitute for a scoliosis screening conducted
by a healthcare professional, especially when a child
is in his or her growing years. However, the answers to
the following questions can provide parents or caregivers
with important information to share with a doctor.

This image illustrates the scoliotic spine. |
 |
- With the child standing and bending forward at the
waist, with arms extended downward and palms pressed
together at knee level, is there:
- a prominence or hump near the ribs?
- an asymmetry in the waist or hips (one side
higher than the other)?
- Look at the child's shoulders:
- Is one shoulder higher than the other?
- Is one shoulder blade more prominent than
the other?
- Are the shoulders rounded?
- When the child stands:
- Is one hip higher or more prominent than the
other?
- Does he or she lean to one side?
- Is the child "swaybacked", that is, the
backbone appears to curve forward?
- Does one side of the child's waist have a larger
crease than the other?
- Is there a family history of scoliosis?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions,
it is recommended that you consult with a doctor. Taking
this quiz is not a substitute for a medical examination.
