In our society, physical appearance and the look of youth is critical. Many studies have demonstrated the fact that attractive people are perceived as being nicer, smarter and more capable. Now, we have the ability to enhance personal appearance safely with surgery. Plastic surgery can give a patient a new outlook on life. However, it is not for everyone. Before you decide to have any plastic surgery, you should carefully think it through and remember that no surgery can create the perfect person, body or face. Here are some guidelines in helping you make your decision:

  • Have realistic expectations about what your outcome will be and how it will impact your life.

  • Be prepared for some discomfort. The level of discomfort depends upon the individual patient, the procedure and other factors. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor prior to the procedure. Pain medicines are provided to make you comfortable.

  • Be prepared for after-care. Some surgeries require longer recuperation periods than others. Make sure you have ample time and a willing care-giver, if necessary.

  • Discuss financing the procedure in the event your insurance company will not cover it. This should be done prior to the procedure so that you will know what costs you should expect.

  • Understand that plastic surgery, like all surgery, has risks. All surgery, similarly, creates scar tissue. Be prepared for some discomfort following the procedure. And, understand that plastic surgery can only change external appearances, not your entire life.

  • Select a surgeon that is well-qualified and with whom you feel comfortable.

  • Ask questions. The best plastic surgery patient is one that asks questions. The best surgeon is one that answers them.
