Innovations in technology enable doctors to view the peripheral
nerves better than ever before, both at the diagnostic
stage and in the operating room:
The Peripheral
Nerve Center at University Hospital uses Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) neurography to capture precise images
of the peripheral nerves. With standard MRI, it is difficult
to distinguish between peripheral nerves and the surrounding
soft tissue. MRI neurography uses the same scanner as
MRI, but with special software that produces cross-sectional
images of the nerves. Not only are peripheral nerves
clearly identifiable from tissue with MRI neurography,
but images of damaged nerves are distinct from those
of healthy nerves. This imaging method helps not only
with diagnosis, but also aids the surgeon in planning
an operation.
Another technology available at University Hospital
is intraoperative monitoring. The patient’s nervous
system function is assessed electrophysiologically during
surgery, enabling the surgeon to make any necessary
adjustments during the operation to avoid permanent
injury to the nerves.
