Below is an example what many patients experience leading up to and following their gastric bypass surgery. It is offered as a guide, however, not all patients have the same experience. Each patient is treated according to their individual needs and the situation below is provided only as a guide to offer some idea of what can be expected.

Day of Surgery

  • Arrive at University Hospital and proceed to E-Yellow (Same Day Surgery Unit).
  • IV Started.
  • Arterial Blood Gas drawn by respiratory therapist.
  • Meet with Anesthesiologist.
  • Proceed to Operating Room for Surgery.
  • Transfer to Recovery Room.
  • Transfer to H-Yellow hospital unit.
  • Out of bed into a chair.

Day #1

  • Foley catheter removed.
  • Patient transported to Physical Therapy Gym for Ambulation Session.
  • Diet advanced to sips of water and chips of ice ("Sips n' Chips").
  • Patient to ambulate out of bed.

Day #2

  • Diet advanced to "Gastric Bypass Clear Liquids"(ie. No Caffeine/No Carbonation/No Concentrated Sweets).
  • Patient started on oral medications, including pain medication.
  • Gradual increase in volume of liquids consumed, to goal of 4 ounces per hour.
  • Patient ambulating more around the H-Yellow hospital unit.

Day #3

  • Subcutaneous drain removed.
  • Prescriptions filled out.
  • Discharge instructions provided to patient.
  • Following breakfast, the patient is discharged home.
