The divisions of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the The
University Hospital are staffed by 150 dedicated professionals
in a wide array of disciplines. The physician team is
comprised of board-certified specialists who are also
faculty members of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.
Cardiology

Marc Klapholz, MD,
FACC, FCSAI
Dr. Klapholz is Associate Professor of Medicine at
New Jersey Medical School and director of the division
of cardiology at NJMS and University Hospital. He earned
his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine and was a clinical research fellow in the
Heart Failure Group at the same institution, earning
an NIH National Research Service Award.
Prior to joining NJMS/UH, Dr. Klapholz was the chief
of the heart failure prevention and treatment program
at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in New
York City. He has been and continues to serve as the
principal investigator on numerous clinical trials,
including the groundbreaking African-American Heart
Failure Trial (A-Heft). He has published extensively
on the subject of heart failure and is a member of several professional organizations and editorial boards.
Dr. Klapholz was recently included in the 2004 edition
of “America’s Top Doctors”, published
by Castle Connolly.

S. Sultan Ahmed, MD
Director of the stress lab and a professor of medicine,
Dr. Ahmed trained at the Tucson (Ariz.) Hospitals Medical
Education Program and at UMDNJ.

Christine Gerula, MD
Dr. Gerula is an assistant professor of medicine and
medical director of telemetry, director of the cardiology
clinic and director of cardiac rehabilitation. She also
sees patients one day a week at the North Hudson Community
Action Corporation. A 1996 graduate of the New Jersey
Medical School, Dr. Gerula completed both her residency
and a fellowship at University Hospital. She is board
certified in internal medicine.

Bunyad Haider, MD
Dr. Haider is a professor of medicine and executive
vice chairman of the department of medicine. He also
serves as a consultant in cardiology at several locations
in Northern New Jersey, including the VA Medical Center
in East Orange.

Kamran Hamirani, MD
Dr. Hamirani is an assistant professor of medicine,
and specializes in cardiology. Board-certified in internal
medicine, Dr. Hamirani is a graduate of Liaquat Medical
College in Pakistan. He completed his residency at Morehouse
School of Medicine in Atlanta before taking a fellowship
at Pennsylvania Hospital and Hahnemann University in
Philadelphia.

Muhamed Saric, MD
Dr. Saric is an assistant professor of medicine and
director of the echocardiography lab. He holds an M.D.
from the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina
and a Ph.D. in basic medical sciences from New York
University, where he did his postdoctoral training and
served as a teaching assistant for six years. He has
participated in several international clinical trials.

Sina Zaim, MD
Dr. Zaim is an assistant professor of medicine and
specializes in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. Dr.
Zaim comes to University Hospital from the Hospital
of the University of Geneva in Switzerland, where he
routinely performed electrophysiology procedures considered
to be on the cutting edge in the U.S. An EP specialist
for more than ten years, he is a graduate of Cornell
University Medical College and did his post-graduate
specialty training at SUNY-Brooklyn (Cardiology) and
at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Clinical Cardiac
Electrophysiology). He is board-certified in Internal
Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Cardiology and Clinical
Cardiac Electrophysiology.
University Cardiology Associates
University Cardiology Associates is group of dedicated
cardiologists who practice in the community and at The
New Jersey Cardiovascular Institute. These physicians
are leaders in their field and hold academic appointments
at the New Jersey Medical School and often teach classes.
They have unique access to the cutting edge technologies
and protocols available at University Hospital and are
invited to attend weekly grand rounds and conferences.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

Barry Esrig, MD
Dr. Esrig is chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, and an associate professor of surgery at the New Jersey Medical School. In addition, he is an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University.
A graduate of the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Esrig completed residencies at NYU Bellevue Hospital, the University of Louisville, KY, and Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in New York and completed several fellowships at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Esrig is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, The American Colleges of Surgery and Cardiology and Chest Physicians.
Douglas Jackson, MD, JD
Dr. Jackson is director of cardiothoracic critical
care and is an associate professor of anesthesiology
at the New Jersey Medical School and an assistant professor
of anesthesiology at Columbia University.
A graduate of Temple University Medical School, Dr.
Jackson completed his residency and a fellowship at
Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York . Dr.
Jackson is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists
and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists.
Justin Sambol, MD
Dr. Sambol is an Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and has expertise in all aspects of general thoracic surgery. His clinical interests include: thoracic oncology, tracheal surgery, minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, off pump coronary surgery, mitral valve repair, and aortic surgery.
He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). He completed both his residency in general surgery and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at NJMS.
