Darlene L. Cox, MS, RN is President and Chief
Executive Officer of The University Hospital.
A seasoned, energetic health care executive, Ms. Cox
is the former President and CEO of Essex Valley Health
Care (East Orange General Hospital) and most recently
served as an executive healthcare consultant, providing
health care management and planning services to a variety
of clients nationwide. Prior to Essex Valley Health
Care, she served as Vice President of Patient Care Services
and Chief Nursing Officer at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical
Center.
No stranger to University Hospital and the Newark community,
Ms. Cox was Chief Nurse and Administrator of Patient
Care Services at University Hospital from 1986-1994.
During her tenure at UH, she took a one-year leave of
absence to join the highly prestigious White House Fellows
program where she worked on health care policy issues.
She returned to UH with a new perspective on leadership
as well as a strict adherence to sound fiscal policy.
From the bedside as a staff nurse, to the boardroom,
to the White House and back, Ms. Cox has thrived in
leadership roles in large institutions and smaller organizations
alike. She brings with her a distinguished career as
well as the combined perspectives of a caregiver, business
administrator and adept negotiator -- a unique fit for
UH and its mission of excellence in patient care, education,
research and community service.
