James R. Gonzalez, MPH, FACHE
President and CEO (Interim) of University Hospital and
President and CEO of Broadway House for Continuing Care
Since August 2011, James R. Gonzalez has served as the President and CEO (Interim) of University Hospital. A well-respected healthcare executive, Mr. Gonzalez has more than 30 years of experience at major medical centers in the tri-state area. His expertise in hospital operations, post-acute care, behavioral health, community outreach and quality improvement provides him with a strong foundation for the challenge of leading a major, urban academic medical center.
After serving as executive vice president and chief operating officer for East Orange General Hospital, Mr. Gonzalez became assistant vice president of administration at UMDNJ-University Hospital in 1999. His achievements during that period include leading a $14 million renovation of the emergency room, and producing major cost savings by revamping the admitting services organization and introducing just-in-time delivery of medical and surgical supplies.
Approximately two years later, Mr. Gonzalez became president and chief executive officer of Broadway House for Continuing Care, a 78-bed acute care facility in Newark which opened 18 years ago as a nursing home specializing in the care and treatment of people with HIV/AIDS who many assumed would be unable to return to independent living. Broadway House has focused its treatment philosophy on rehabilitation and living with AIDS, with a large percentage of its residents regaining their health and reintegrating back into the community.
Broadway House receives national attention and praise for its achievements. It was the first AIDS-specialized long-term care facility in the country to be recognized by the American Hospital Association with a Circle of Life Award, a salute to the caregivers and their quality of care. Twice, it was ranked among the nation's best-run nursing homes by U.S. News & World Report. Broadway House has received several deficiency-free state surveys from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
Mr. Gonzalez received a Master of Public Health degree in Health Services Administration from Yale University and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently serves on the Boards of Trustees of Caldwell College and the John V. Kelly Memorial Foundation. He also serves as an appointed member of the New Jersey Governor's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and Related Blood-Borne Pathogens.
