A person who meets even three of the following five criteria for metabolic syndrome are at greater risk for developing heart disease, diabetes, or stroke:

  1. Waist measurement of 40 inches or more for men and 35 inches or more for women
  2. Blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg or higher
  3. Fasting glucose level of 110 mg/dL or higher
  4. Triglyceride level of 150 mg/dL or higher
  5. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level less than 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women.
