A team of specially trained professionals administer ECT at University Hospital in Newark. Psychiatrists, anesthesiologists and nurses work together to provide you with a safe, comfortable experience. The two physicians leading the program are Charles Kellner, MD and Georgios Petrides, MD.

Dr. Kellner is professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital. He received his undergraduate and MD degrees at Cornell University in New York and went on to complete a residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, followed by a three-year fellowship in biological psychiatry at the NIMH. He began work in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as a faculty member of the Medical University of South Carolina in 1984 where he remained until his appointment at NJMS in 2002. Editor of the "Journal of ECT" from 1994 to 2003, Dr. Kellner is also a member of the American Psychiatric Association’s Committee on ECT.

Dr. Petrides is an associate professor and vice-chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital. In addition, Dr. Petrides is director of ECT research at Hillside Hospital in Long Island, NY. He received his medical degree from the National University in Athens, Greece, and completed his residency at the University Hospital at SUNY Stonybrook, followed by a two-year fellowship in ECT and clinical research under the supervision of Dr. Max Fink. A published author and accomplished ECT researcher, Dr. Petrides is also on the editorial board of the "Journal of ECT"
