Peter W. Carmel, M.D., D. Med. Sc. Professor & Chief, Division of Neurological Surgery; Director, Center for Pediatric Neurosurgery

Dr. Peter W. Carmel, an internationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, specializes in brain tumors and congenital malformations in both children and adults.

Dr. Carmel has been listed in several physician-selected consumer guides to outstanding physicians, including the recent American Health Magazine survey of the "Best Doctors in America," and the latest edition of the book, The Best Doctors in America, published by Woodward/White.

Before coming to the New Jersey Medical School, he was professor and Director of Pediatric Neurological Surgery at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York for nine years. He had been on the faculty of Columbia University and an Attending Neurosurgeon at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center since 1967.

Dr. Carmel has lectured extensively on neurological surgery throughout the United States and abroad, including France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Scandinavia, and Mexico.

His research focuses on childhood brain tumors, congenital anomalies of the nervous system, and the structure and function of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. His research into these and other areas has resulted in nearly 70 scientific articles and 25 books and chapters.

Active in several professional organizations, Dr. Carmel has held leadership positions in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the National Coalition for Research in Neurological Diseases and Stroke and the National Foundation for Brain Research. He is the Neurosurgical representative at the American Medical Association's House of Delegates, and is a member of the AMA's Council on Long Range Planning.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of the University of Chicago in 1956, an M.D. degree from New York University’s Bellevue College of Medicine in 1960, and a Doctor of Medical Science degree in neuroanatomy from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1970.
