The implantation procedure involves three phases:
1) Patient Evaluation
Prior to implantation, we conduct a series of evaluations
that include:
- A complete audiological evaluation
- Medical evaluation by our otologist
- Inner ear CT scan
- Hearing aid evaluation which includes word and sentence
evaluations performed with and without visual cues
and speech-language evaluations
- Conference with our medical team
2) The Surgical Procedure
Cochlear implant surgery is performed while you are
under general anesthesia. The surgery typically takes
about three hours and may be performed on an inpatient
or outpatient basis. The internal portions of the cochlear
implant system are implanted totally beneath the skin.
You are generally discharged from the hospital the
day after surgery. In a short period of time, most individuals
feel well enough to resume normal activities.
3) Patient Follow-up
After the recuperative period, you return to the audiologist
for the initial fitting of the external components and
mapping - which programs information related to frequency
and volume. The process takes half a day. The map can
be updated easily as you become accustomed to hearing
speech and other sounds again.
Over the course of many appointments, the speech processors
are mapped and adjusted for you to hear.
