We will be happy to help you determine if you are a suitable candidate for a cochlear implant.

Adults who meet the following criteria may be cochlear implant candidates:

  • Age 18 or older
  • Have severe–to-profound sensorineural hearing loss ("nerve deafness") in both ears
  • Receive little or no benefit from appropriate hearing aids, i.e., a score of 50 percent or less on sentence recognition tests while wearing hearing aids
  • Have no medical contraindications to surgery

Children who meet the following criteria may be cochlear implant candidates:

  • Age 12 months and older
  • Have severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss ("nerve deafness") in both ears
  • Receive little or no benefit from hearing aids
  • Are in an education program that supports listening and speaking for communication
  • Have families with high motivation and appropriate expectations
  • Have no medical contraindications to surgery
