We will be happy to help you determine if you are a suitable
candidate for a cochlear implant. Adults
who meet the following criteria may be cochlear implant
candidates:
- Age 18 or older
- Have severe–to-profound sensorineural hearing loss
("nerve deafness") in both ears
- Receive little or no benefit from appropriate hearing
aids, i.e., a score of 50 percent or less on sentence
recognition tests while wearing hearing aids
- Have no medical contraindications to surgery
Children who meet the following
criteria may be cochlear implant candidates:
- Age 12 months and older
- Have severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss
("nerve deafness") in both ears
- Receive little or no benefit from hearing aids
- Are in an education program that supports listening
and speaking for communication
- Have families with high motivation and appropriate
expectations
- Have no medical contraindications to surgery
