The divisions of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the The University Hospital are staffed by 150 dedicated professionals in a wide array of disciplines. The physician team is comprised of board-certified specialists who are also faculty members of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS).

Justin Sambol, MD

Justin Sambol, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital and New Jersey Medical School.  Dr. Sambol specializes in all aspects of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery including off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, mitral valve repairs, endovascular repairs, aortic surgery including thoracic aortic aneurysm repair,.

In addition, Dr. Sambol’s interests include thoracic oncology, tracheal surgery as well as minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic procedures.

He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and completed medical school as well as his residency in general surgery and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at New Jersey Medical School.

Constantinos Lovoulos, MD,

Constantinos Lovoulos, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School and a member of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital and New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Lovoulos specializes in all aspects of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery including surgery of the Thoracic Aorta (aortic root, ascending, arch and descending), mitral and tricuspid valve repair, and lung and esophageal surgery.

In addition, Dr. Lovoulos clinical interests include heart transplantation and ventricular assist device implantation and coronary revascularization and left ventricular remodeling on low ejection fraction patients.

He is a graduate of Medical School of Aristotle University and completed residency, clinical fellowship and research fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale University-Yale New Haven Hospital. He is also fluent in Greek.

Douglas Jackson, MD, JD

Dr. Jackson is director of cardiothoracic critical care and is an associate professor of anesthesiology at the NJMS and an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Columbia University.

A graduate of Temple University Medical School, Dr. Jackson completed his residency and a fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York . Dr. Jackson is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists.

Paul Bolanowski, MD

Paul Bolanowski, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at NJMS. He is an expert in thoracic oncology, tracheal reconstruction, chest wall reconstruction, and surgery for myasthenia gravis and tuberculosis. He has been a member of the UMDNJ teaching faculty since 1973.

Dr. Bolanowski is a 1961 graduate of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts and a 1965 graduate of UMDNJ-NJMS. From 1965-1967 he completed his Internship and began his Residency in General Surgery at the Yale, New Haven Medical School in Connecticut. He has served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corp. and also served in Vietnam.

Dr. Bolanowski completed his residency in General Surgery at UMDNJ-NJMS in 1971 and his cardiothoracic residency in 1973, also at UMDNJ-NJMS. Dr. Bolanowski is board certified in both General and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
