Marc Klapholz, MD, FACC, FCSAI

Dr. Klapholz is Associate Professor of Medicine at New Jersey Medical School and director of the division of cardiology at NJMS and University Hospital. He earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was a clinical research fellow in the Heart Failure Group at the same institution, earning an NIH National Research Service Award.

Prior to joining NJMS/UH, Dr. Klapholz was the chief of the heart failure prevention and treatment program at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in New York City. He has been and continues to serve as the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials, including the groundbreaking African-American Heart Failure Trial (A-Heft). He has published extensively on the subject of heart failure and is a member of several professional organizations and editorial boards.

Dr. Klapholz was recently included in the 2007 edition of “America’s Top Doctors”, published by Castle Connolly.

Edo Kaluski, MD

Dr. Kaluski is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories & Invasive Cardiology. Dr. Kaluski earned his medical doctorate at Ben-Gurion University Medical School in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Dr. Kaluski's post-doctoral training was at Rambam University Medical Center, Bat-Galim, Haifa, Israel; Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ; Tel-Aviv Medical Center, Tel-Aviv, Israel; and Hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

S. Sultan Ahmed, MD

Director of the stress lab and a professor of medicine, Dr. Ahmed trained at the Tucson (Ariz.) Hospitals Medical Education Program and at UMDNJ.

Sandhya Dhruvakumar, MD

Sandhya Dhruvakumar, MD, is assistant professor of medicine and specializes in Cardiac Electrophysiology.  She earned her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, graduating with honors. After finishing a residency in Internal Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, Dr. Dhruvakumar completed her Cardiology Fellowship at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York (Cornell campus). She did an additional two years of training in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she gained expertise in complex procedures including catheter based ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.  She is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology and board eligible in cardiac electrophysiology.

Christine Gerula, MD

Dr. Gerula is an assistant professor of medicine and medical director of telemetry, director of the cardiology clinic and director of cardiac rehabilitation. She also sees patients one day a week at the North Hudson Community Action Corporation. A 1996 graduate of the New Jersey Medical School, Dr. Gerula completed both her residency and a fellowship at University Hospital. She is board certified in internal medicine.

Bunyad Haider, MD

Dr. Haider is a professor of medicine and interim chairman of the department of medicine.

James Maher, MD

James Maher, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine and serves as the medical director of telemetry, and associate director of the heart failure program.  He completed his medical residency and served as Chief Medical Resident prior to completing a cardiovascular fellowship at UMDNJ.  He has participated in several international clinical trials involving heart failure and coronary artery disease.

Apostolos Voudouris , MD,

Apostolos Voudouris , MD, is an assistant professor of medicine and is in charge of the electrophysiology laboratories at the University Hospital in Newark and VA Hospital in East Orange. He holds an M.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and finished his 2 year fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Maryland.  He has participated in several clinical trials and his areas of clinical expertise are: radio-frequency ablation procedures for cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac pacing and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy, Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and evaluation and management of syncope.

University Cardiology Associates is group of dedicated cardiologists who practice in the community and at University Hospital. These physicians are leaders in their field and hold academic appointments at the New Jersey Medical School. They have unique access to the cutting edge technologies and protocols available at University Hospital and are invited to attend weekly grand rounds and conferences.
