The Breast Cancer Program at University Hospital combines the experience and expertise of the New Jersey Medical School faculty with the latest technological advances in diagnosis and treatment to provide all women with the best possible outcome. Every case is considered on an individualized basis, with as much participation by the patient and family as they desire.

The Breast Cancer Program offers the most effective screening and diagnostic tools, including digital mammography, MRI and PET scanning capability, and the complete array of image guided biopsy techniques.

Our breast surgeons are expert in breast-sparing techniques as well as new approaches, such as sentinel node biopsy and ductal lavage. Working in collaborative teams with radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, they ensure that the care and comfort of their patients are coordinated at all times. They also work closely with their colleagues in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to plan for breast reconstruction, when appropriate.

Pathologists, pain management specialists, therapists, psychologists, nurses, physician assistants, registered dieticians and a variety of other healthcare professionals all focus on the care of the breast cancer patient. This multidisciplinary consideration of all facets of a patient’s care is formalized during the weekly case conference, where treatment plans and patient status are reviewed and discussed from many points of view and expertise.

While much attention is necessarily focused on the medical treatment of the patient, her emotional, social and spiritual needs are respected and addressed. Our team recognizes the power of faith, positive thinking, and humor in the healing process and encourages the patient and her family to embrace these facets of their lives.
