Breast cancer treatment will hopefully be a life-saving
experience, but it will certainly be a life-changing experience.
The decisions that are made regarding a woman’s
breast health will have a tremendous impact on her life
and the lives of those who care about her.
The breast team at University Hospital encourages all
patients to seek second opinions so that they can be
as informed and as comfortable with their decision as
possible. Getting an opinion from a second physician
doesn’t mean you don’t trust the first doctor.
It is simply good practice to consult with a second
party to see how their opinion may differ or be the
same.
In addition to speaking to a physician, patients are
advised to get as much background information as they
can from credible sources, such as the federal government
and large cancer associations. There are several comprehensive
information sources on the Internet that go into great
detail about all aspects of breast cancer and patients
and/or their families should take advantage of them.
These sources also help you prepare questions for your
doctor and other health professionals. See
our Helpful Links section for some suggestions.
Speaking to cancer survivors is also a good way to
obtain information and to help prepare yourself for
the experience ahead. Support group meetings, peer counseling
and online chat rooms are ways in which you may reach
out to other women who have experience with breast cancer.
While some women may want to know as much as possible
and be an active participant in every decision regarding
their diagnosis and treatment, other women may feel
too overwhelmed or emotionally stressed to be that proactive.
Others may wish to focus their energies on their families
rather than themselves. In these cases, it is advisable
to ask a family member or friend to participate as an
advocate for the patient.
The breast health team at University Hospital is committed
to providing every patient with the best possible outcome
while respecting a woman’s choices, beliefs, values,
and actions regarding her own body.
